In last month’s newsletter we introduced our new DAT Certification developed by a group of individuals here at Drake. The certification is one of many customer benefits which are a result of our adherence to Lean Thinking. By definition, this is an organization’s pervasive philosophy that all efforts should add value to the product for the customer.

One of the tenets is an attitude of continual improvement. We regularly establish teams to address potential advancements in the entire operation and production process. All are ultimately customer focused. This gives Drake the flexibility to be responsive to current needs and to benefit from individual employee’s contributions.

Any effort that does not increase value as an end result, creates waste. This describes our continuing endeavor to manage resources responsibly. As a participant in the global cooperative action of Sustainability we would like to share a few of our measures.

By-products of the steel, aluminum, and copper we use in production are recycled. Scrap in this area has been reduced by more than 30% over the previous year, a direct result of one of Drake’s teams. Also addressing the reduction of waste, potentially harmful chemical processes have been limited. Hydraulic oils, coolants, and print cartridges are returned for reprocessing. The addition of metal halide lighting is one example of increased energy efficiency. Our endeavors continue to grow, with the goal of continually reducing our environmental impact.

Upcoming newsletters will share additional ways we are operating more efficiently and improving quality.

A modification example follows...

The O-Ring Stirrer Paddle Assembly is a modification that enhances sanitation. The motor/ reducers have been moved out of the product zone to the outside of the Collator side plate. Driven by a 5/8” round O-Ring Eagle belt the Stirrer Paddle Assemblies are designed with sanitation in mind. The assemblies remain adjustable and can be quickly disassembled for cleaning.

In this case, you can tell a lot about someone by his name, Artie. Drawing has always been something Mr. Cason loved to do, arranging his high school schedule so that half the day was spent in art classes. Although his portfolio includes a wide range of subjects in two and three dimension, animals and nature are among his favorites. His art resume includes placing first, second, and third in an art competition. A number of pieces of his work have traveled the state in an exhibit sponsored by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

When it comes to your Drake project, Artie is the first step in the process. He gets us started off on the right foot as the Bar Stock Inventory Manager and Hyd Mech Automatic Saw Operator.
